Rhodiola rosea is a medicinal plant belonging to the Crassulaceae family, native to Siberia, but is also widespread in Mongolia and grows wild in the mountains of Northern Europe, Lapland, and Scandinavia, and in North America, Alaska. The use of rhodiola has a truly legendary history, like many other herbal extracts.

The root is used to improve physical performance and immune resistance, and generally to improve mental and physical health. It is even said that the Vikings took it as a tonic after intense physical exertion. In Tibet, ancient local populations consumed it to better adapt to the altitude and harsh climate. In Siberia, too, in addition to being used to protect against low winter temperatures, there was a popular belief that those who drank its infusion daily would live for more than a century. Furthermore, Rhodiola rosea root was given to newlyweds to ensure the good health of their unborn children, as it was considered a powerful stimulant. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the root was also used to treat various ailments and for its invigorating effect. The first scientific studies on Rhodiola date back to the first half of the last century, when several scientists, mostly Russian, began to observe the effects of this indigenous plant, but it was only in the early 1960s that information on the benefits and properties of Rhodiola was made public to the Western world.

Nowadays, when fatigue sets in, during particularly stressful or tiring times, during seasonal changes, intense workouts, moments of constant concentration, and in any situation where the body weakens, taking rhodiola can help restore balance.

Rhodiola roots have adaptogenic, anti-stress, and generally promote learning and memory abilities, well-known and traditionally practiced in Siberian, Chinese, and Scandinavian folk medicine. These properties have been scientifically proven and are attributable to the presence of phenylpropanoid glycosides, specifically salidroside and rosavidin, whose chemical structure is similar to that of syringin (eleutheroside B), one of the active ingredients in Eleutherococcus. Salidroside is the most pharmacologically active compound. This glycoside, also called rhodioloside and known as rhodosin, is found in the root of Rhodiola rosea. Taking it stimulates the production of serotonin, adrenaline, and dopamine, improving mood with an antidepressant effect. It also enhances intellectual ability by positively affecting metabolic functions (of the heart, liver, and muscles) without side effects. The organic acids and flavonoids contained in Rhodiola rosea, however, determine its antioxidant properties.

Rhodiola increases plasma concentrations of beta-endorphins, which can prevent hormonal changes indicative of stress. It has a cardioprotective effect in the presence of tachycardia and palpitations due to anxiety and nervousness, and it helps increase endurance and reduce recovery time after intense exercise. In fact, in the sports field, Soviet scientists recommended its use for athletes to improve cardiovascular and respiratory activity during endurance activities and to optimize mitochondrial energy flow by promoting higher levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and creatine phosphate in the mitochondria, thus ensuring a general improvement in oxidative metabolism. It helps support the athlete's immune defenses, reducing the risk of overtraining during intense training sessions or endurance competitions. Athletes appreciate the fact that it reduces the onset of post-intense training pain (DOMS) and thus facilitates muscle recovery. A reduction in inflammatory cytokines and muscle damage markers such as myoglobin, creatine kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase is observed, thus supporting the much-cited "myoprotective" role.

The plant has slimming properties, due to the stimulation of certain lipases capable of accelerating the release of fat from storage tissues (lipolysis) to transform them into brown fat, so that it can be easily synthesized, i.e. "burned" to produce energy.

Its main virtues, for which it is known and widely used today, are that it is an excellent "anti-stress" adaptogen, helping to recover from states of physical and mental exhaustion due to particularly "strenuous" periods in life, which also lead to increased nervousness. It acts primarily on the sympathetic nervous system, combating anxiety and depression, increasing (by up to 30%!) blood levels of serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of well-being, and counteracting the harmful effects of cortisol, the stress hormone, while also significantly reducing anxious hunger. The glycosides contained in the root are also capable of increasing levels of dopamine, a substance capable of transmitting a satiety signal to the CNS.

Soviet studies have shown that, by acting as a stimulant on the female hormonal system, it is indicated for amenorrhea, as well as significantly improving fertility. In male fertility, it promotes sexual function and performance in 70% of men suffering from erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation.
Rhodiola rosea has no particular contraindications, but high doses can cause insomnia and irritability. Avoid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not give Rhodiola rosea to children.

It is not recommended for those with heart problems or high blood pressure, as well as those experiencing nervous exhaustion or high levels of anxiety. Rhodiola should absolutely not be used if you are taking antidepressants, anxiolytics, or barbiturates, as it increases their side effects.

Rhodiola rosea extract, even in today's fast-paced world, is a highly effective natural extract with powerful adaptogenic properties that can help you stay mentally active, capable, and efficient in situations of particular psychophysical stress. It can address physical and mental fatigue, improving attention, concentration, and resistance to fatigue, without interfering with normal biological functions.
